Audi's A1 gets even greener

GREEN FRIENDLY: Audi's latest A1 is now even better gram for gram.

Audi's popular little A1 hatchback has been made even more green-friendly as the German automaker launches a super fuel-efficient version.

The new 1.6 TDI engine's emissions have fallen below 100g/km (only by 1g/km, but whatever...) from 105g/km and its fuel consumption has fallen to a claimed of 3.1 litres/100km (from 3.9).

The German automaker has not skimped on performance, though - the new TDI is still capable of 100km/h in 10.5 seconds and 189km/h top speed.

FRUGAL LIMOUSINE

If you’re in the UK, Audi’s frugal TDI will now be exempt from the London congestion charge and from vehicle excise duty from the second year of ownership.

Audi will launch its new front-wheel-drive A8 3.0 TDI later in 2011 with a claimed fuel economy of five litres/100km and 159g/km of CO2/km.

After saying the updated turbodiesel engine would probably not be added to the local A1 range, Audi SA later confirmed it would form part of the model update. Timing has not yet been established.
