Alfa Giulia is 50 - get nostalgic!

One of the world’s most advanced and best-loved sports sedans, the Alfa Giulia, was launched on June 17 1962 and tributes for this iconic Italian ride will be held around the world.

Alfa Romeo's Giulia was a stylish, technologically advanced sedan and from 1962-77 the Italian automaker sold a million of them.

Monza racetrack near Milan was a fitting venue for the launch of the Giulia TI, a circuit where Alfa Romeo achieved so much of its sporting successes. In 1965 the Brianza track saw the return of Alfa Romeo to Grand Prix racing since the automaker's exit in the 1950s, with the performance-tuned Giulia Sprint GTA.

DOWN MEMORY LANE

The Giulia, in that era of tubular chassis, push-rod engines and leaf-spring suspension, caused a sensation as a volume family sedan when it arrived with a monocoque body, coil springs and a twin-cam engine with a five-speed gearbox.

As part its 50th anniversary celebrations Alfa has released a special logo for the car, originated from a famous advertisement which described the sedan as “designed by the wind”.

The Giulia would become available in 1.3 and 1.6 models including TI and Super configurations along with the limited TI Super built to compete in International Touring Car races and South Africa would play its own role in the development of the Giulia with so-called Rallye versions, including a two-litre model with unique wheels and a limited-slip differential.

CLUB TRIBUTES

The TI (or sometimes Ti) nomenclature, meaning Turismo Internazionale or Touring International, remains a nameplate for the sportiest versions of any Alfa sedan such as the 159 Ti.

Alfa Romeo clubs across South Africa will also be paying tribute to the Giulia locally with a special announcement.
