AMG V8 is 2010 engine of the year

Although the full list of winners (in all ten categories) will only be made available after lunchtime on Tuesday, Mercedes-Benz was so excited by two wins at the 2010 International Engine of the Year Awards it jumped the embargo.

We can report Mercedes-Benz’s AMG-developed dry-sump 6.3l (we still say it’s a 6.2) V8 took overall honours in the ‘Best Performance Engine’ and ‘Above 4 litre’ categories.

Affalterbach's V8 appears in all AMG cars with the '63' nomenclature, varying in output from 336-386kW. The engine is also the headline act in Mercedes-Benz's SLS AMG supercar, where is boasts a peak power output of 420kW.

Since its inception back in 1999, the annual Engine of the Year Awards has become an important marketing tool for manufacturers.

Judged by a panel of 65 renowned motoring journalists from 32 countries as disparate as the USA, Japan, China, Russia, New Zealand, India, Korea, Germany, France, Romania, South Africa, Mexico and the UK, the Awards highlight and acknowledge engine engineering excellence.

The 2010 competition saw a greater number of engines eligible (being launched in the past year) than any of the previous 12 years the International Engine of the Year Awards has been going.

Another trend has been downsizing, with an incredible 59 of the 66 new engines launched in the past year and eligible to compete in the contest being in the 1.0- to 1.4l capacity.

We’ll update the winners in each category as soon as the results become official from this year’s awards ceremony, due to start at 2pm in Stuttgart on Tuesday.
