50 000 flock to Pageant of Power

Damp conditions did little to scare off the 50 000-strong crowd that gathered at the Cholmondeley Pageant of Power on the weekend to take in the on-track action and the large number of additional attractions at the gathering.

The record crowd attended the 2012 pageant from June 15 to 17, 2012 where, despite the damp conditions, a new lap record was set by Scott Mansell on the 1.9km track.

The timed Supercar Class proved one of the major new highlights of the pageant and Mansell, driving a Caterham Superlight SP/300.R track toy, set a time of 61.89 seconds to beat the 62.68 seconds set by Nikki Faulkner in a Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera LP570-4 in 2010.

'MAGNIFICENT MARQUES'

While not able to beat the track-only Caterham Superlight to overall fastest-lap honours, the BAC Mono driven by Duncan Tappy did manage to secure a class win, with a best time of 63.06 seconds.

Exhibiting manufacturers included the event’s “Magnificent Marques” sponsors – Bentley, Jaguar, Ford and BMW – who also invited guests to experience the Cholmondeley circuit for themselves during the Friday morning session.

This is the second time the event has been run on the Friday, too, giving visitors a chance to get close to the international field of famous cars, racing drivers and motorcyclists filling the paddocks.

INTERACTIVE ATTRACTIONS

Apart from the many car clubs showing their wares, there were almost 1000 cars on static display while more than 120 racing cars and bikes took to the Cholmondeley circuit.

James Hall, event director for the Cholmondeley Pageant of Power, said: “We introduced new interactive attractions and brought in an even wider field of famous international cars, motorcycles, boats, aeroplanes and helicopters to keep the adrenaline flowing.

“We’ve been really delighted by the feedback from attendees and exhibitors, and we’re already thinking of new ways to ensure the Pageant continues to go from strength to strength next year.”
