Bowing to “a great deal of demand for the Focus RS”, Ford has confirmed that a limited number of the ultimate Blue Oval hot hatch will be available in South Africa later this year.
More hardcore than the already-entertaining Focus ST, the RS was developed with track days in mind and, as such, has performance figures that make for breathtaking reading.
Its power comes courtesy of the familiar 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine, which, for duty in the RS, has been bolstered to produce 224 kW at 6 000 r/min and a crushing 440 Nm from 2 250 to 4 500 r/min.
224 kW on the front wheels?
Mated to a six-speed, short shifting manual transmission, the RS’s 0-100 km/h sprint time comes up in under six seconds. All that power is channeled to the front wheels, but Ford has come up with trick differential and suspension tweaks to (hopefully) keep the RS going as intended. It is, after all, inspired by the company’s World Rally Championship exploits…
And Focus RS looks the part too with its eye-popping colour palette, aggressive styling, Recaro racing seats and other go-faster paraphernalia.
“The 224kW Focus RS offers performance to rival many sports cars and has a bold, aggressive design, inspired by Ford’s rally heritage. It’s a Ford like no other and we are eager to introduce it to the local fans,” Ford marketing manager Ben Pillay said.
