VW double cab for '09 - new spy pics

2008-07-22 11:55

VW will launch its Robust bakkie in 2009. (Photos: AUTOMEDIA)

Despite several recent conflicting reports, spy photographers caught Volkswagen’s upcoming pickup in the United States.

Rumour currently has it that VW won’t be selling its Nissan Navara rival in Europe. However, other sources have stated that it will be available in certain parts of Europe but it won’t be built in Hannover, Germany, as originally planned.

Instead, all production will take place in Pacheco, Argentina.

Volkswagen is apparently planning on building about 90 000 units annually for South American and developing markets.

The “Robust” name is just a working codename which will most likely be changed before the market launch in the end of 2009.

Does not look like a care for us. We need more than space for 6 people in the loading area. VW: You missed it!

L Savage: I think you haven't noticed that there is actually another AntiToyota fan on this site. He calls himself AntiJap II. Thus please in the future, refer to him as AntiJap II. I didn't post that comment.

AntiJap - you are in denial. Please point me to a quality survey that places a BMW, MERC or VW engine even close to a Toyota in reliability. Secondly the reason people would rather buy a more expensive Toyota than a Jeep (or any American car) is that in 5 years the Toyota will still be mechanically sound. PS I am NOT a Toyota fan. I think Honda beat them at all their strengths (making Toyota as a brand kind of redundant). I also think Toyota makes just about the dullest machines on the planet.

I find it ironic that while discussing a VW product, our local Toyota antifan chooses to attack Toyota on the age of their engine design. Almost all Toyotas are using latest generation vvti or D4-D engines (except for those intended for use as taxis). VW 1.6 and 2.0 engines used in their 'modern', 'premium' Golf/Jetta/Polo range have been around since Golf 3 - making them at least 15 years old. The ever-popular 1.9TDi has been around for at least 10 years. We won't even go into what is being used in their citigolfs. I'm afraid AntiJap, that once again your excessive bias has clouded your ability to reason, and once again your credibility lies in tatters.

I don’t really care if it’s a Hilux with a VW badge as long as it is not powered by a Toyota diesel engine. There are much better engines from VW, BMW and Mercedes around, and they are just as reliable. Even the new Hilux range has engines that are from 5 to 7 years old. The KZ-TE engine still offered in the Prado dates from 1993, and for that you pay 500 grand. How someone will still buy this vehicle when you can get a Grand Cherokee for the same price with an engine that outputs 160KWand 510 Nm torque, has better acceleration and fuel consumption and service intervals of 20 000km, is beyond my comprehension.

ALL, i did some research... Rumour goes that VW is using a new chassis (which is VW) but a hilux body is mounted on top of it. So yes, it looks like a hilux, but underneath its a new VW. There is a relationship between the 2, but im pretty sure VW will not just rebadge a Toyota...

With all the diesel engine's why don't we see some of that in the CITI and CADDY BAKKIE range and consumption can we get on those two bodies but we must always wait till the last end???

It's about time VW had a change!! The old caddy, now citi pick-up, has never had a shape change! still a citi golf without back seats. I think still made with a carb operated motor!! Decades overdue VW!!

"It wouldn't be the first time VW has sold rebadged Hiluxes. Toyota and VW had an agreement in the 1980s and 1990s, where VW built Hilux-based Taro pickups in its Hanover, Germany factory. The trucks were produced from 1989 to 1994."

Nathi: it quite obvious why Jappie bakkie engines is so 'robust'. You've already mentioned one of them. The other obvious one is that of the old hilUX. The old Datun/ Nissan 1400 have been around for almost forever. Thus during that time they've ironed out all of that engines flaws. It’s exactly the same with the previous hilUX bakkies. It also have been around forever. The outer body might have changed (with billions of face lifts and cover-ups), but that engine stayed the same. Enough time to fix all the rough spots. And because there's so many sold of them, anyone who mentions bakkie engines, knows Jappie bakkie engines is good. It's not that it's good, it's because it's been around for almost forever & tweaked to pieces. Personally I still believe the 'new' and face lifted hilUX bakkies needs to prove themselves. If not mistake, it's FINALLY not only a different shape but there are actually new engines also available - which is about time.

Yes it is a Hilux. If I recall correctly VW did sell the previous Hilux as a VW bakkie in Europe.

You guys need to travel more, before making silly comments. I had a VW Pickup for many years in Germany, they are not a newcomer to pickups, just been dormant for a while.

VW has some great TDI engines. If they can up their quality control and service, it might be a winner.

I agree AntiJap that one is good powerplant...but problem with me is that I'm AntiYank too. When it comes to bakkie building...Japanese got it right with the bakkies long ago...remember the Datsun before the Hardbody? I don't even like the BT-50 because it's a disguised/rebadged Ranger. I agree with those here who suspect this might be an facelifted Hilux. Again I respect them for their engines, but this is a market VW has overlooked for so long. SA of all colours love their bakkies and they want something to take to Nambia and Zululand without a hassle. Again I respect VW they managed to introduced their first truck, the Constallation [although Brazilian with sometimes a Cummins engine]. I wonder why they never used technology from either MAN or Scania.

Nathi: ..or better still, the 'Robust' engine of the new Ford Ranger 4.0L V6!! Now THAT's some real power for a Bakkie.

This looks as if Toyota was involved with the design process. Are we looking at another common platform initiative?

At last... a German competitor for the Oriental crowd of vehicles... Now, if the price is right, it will sell in droves...

Hang on, VW? Bakkie? Are they us8ing the same VW engines? No ways!! Well except for the Volkswagen TDi engine!! They should get the Robust engine from Japan...now where are the keys to that 3.0D-4D Hilux?
