Likely to be the fastest production Mercedes yet built, the new car is apparently to be named SLC - a name that might also hint to the car's un-retractable roof and a reminiscence to the 1980s SL's tin-topped brother.
The SLC will be based on the next SL model and it could break cover in 2009.
There have also been rumours for quite some time of a McLaren/Mercedes-Benz split from building super road cars.
Therefore the SLC will be massively pimped by AMG which will do lots of modifications to the SL, including enormously wide fenders, additional air-intakes in the carbon fibre hood and front skirt, huge magnesium wheels, a diffusor below the rear bumper and a wing on the boot lid.
There's no word on engine choice, but the CLK63 AMG's 6.2-liter V8 seems a likely choice. But rumour has it that in the SLC this V8 will pump out more than 520kW.
The roof will be crafted in carbon fibre to lower the SLC's centre of gravity and further reduce weight. Furthermore it seems as if the SLC could get gullwing doors too.
