Thinly disguised versions of Volkswagen's new Tiguan SUV are completing final testing in Namibia just months ahead of the official unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

And the licence plates on one of the fake-badged models also indicate that this is the same car caught testing in Cape Town a few months ago.

The baby SUV's electronics, particularly the new radio and navigation systems, and chassis are the focus of the testing in the unforgiving Namibian terrain.

The Tiguan will be more than a soft roader. It will come equipped with a range of electronic systems aimed at making the 4X4 more capable off road by simply engaging the off-road mode.

Off-road mode incorporates the "hill descent assistant", "hill climb assist", and ABS and EDS adaptations for braking on loose road surfaces and activating the electronic differential locks when slip is detected. Up to five ECUs manage these systems.

The range of SUVs will be powered by a selection of TSI petrol and TDI turbodiesel engines producing between 103 and 147 kW of power.

The SUV uses a McPherson strut and four-link rear axle arrangement linked to VW's 4Motion four-wheel drive system, which according to VW ensures agile driving, high stability levels and good handling off-road.

Electromechanical power steering, a top-notch radio navigation system with specially developed off-road functionality and Park Assist, for automatic steering into a parking bay, are just some of the desirable features on board.

Two distinct front ends will be offered. The "Trend and Fun", with a maximum approach angle of 18 degrees, will be aimed at urban lifestyle. For those who are more adventurous off road, the "Track and Field" alternative has an approach angle of up to 28 degrees. Depending on the model, 16- or 17-inch wheels are standard equipment while 18-inch alloys as optional.
