Though Renault has previously had an SUV in the form of the Scenic RX4, the production Koleos will be the French manufacturer's first "proper" SUV.
All-new from the ground up, the new SUV is shown here undergoing heat testing in France.
Renault promises its Koleos will be rugged enough to be capable off-road, yet provide comfort and feature levels to rival that of a mid-sized sedan.
The SUV, with a ground clearance of about 200 mm, will be based on a new four-wheel drive platform. Power will be sourced from new 2.0-litre petrol and 2.0 dCi turbodiesel engines.
Emission levels on the turbodiesel are kept down with a periodic regeneration particulate filter that operates without the use of additives.
Both the platform and engine are products of the Renault-Nissan alliance. Drive to the four wheels will be via a six-speed manual gearbox.
According to reports, the production vehicle will be equipped with aluminium roof rails and 19-inch alloy wheels.
It will also contain a wide range of driver aids, including ABS, EBA and ESP. Aids useful when off-roading include Hill Down Control (HDC) and Hill Start Assist (HAS).
Unveiled in concept form at last year's Paris Motor Show, the production version is due to go on sale in international markets early in 2008.
