Rumour has it that Porsche is to enter the premium hatchback segment. According to German car magazine Auto Bild Porsche is planning to launch a hatchback, derived from the VW Golf VI, in 2012.
Although this might seem like internet gossip, it isn't far-fetched at all as manufacturers like Porsche are under increasing pressure to produce more fuel-efficient vehicles.
For example Porsche has said it is worried about the upcoming CAFE legislation (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) in the US, report 4Car. A small Porsche model will reduce the carmaker's average fuel consumption figure for its line-up.
Such a Porsche model will rival the top-end models of upmarket hatchbacks such as the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series.
Porsche will probably ask VW, in which it has a 31% controlling stake, for help to develop a new entry-level model. Therefore it makes sense that the Porsche sports hatch will share its genes with that of the Golf and Audi A3.
