Wheels24's spies caught the next generation Volkswagen Golf in the Californian desert in 3-door and 5-door guises.
Although VW is as always tight-lipped about when the Golf is due for replacement, it is no secret that the German carmaker is looking at ways to reduce production costs of its most important model.
European sales of the car have been lagging, and manufacturing time is nearly twice as long as other cars in its class.
We hear that orders from management are to simplify and shorten the assembly process, and produce the next generation on the current but updated platform p with, of course, considerable cost-cutting savings. And, in the process, giving it a more exciting and slightly more aggressive look.
Sources close to Volkswagen believe the new Golf will reach European dealerships in late 2008. This means that the Golf VI could only come here early in 2009.
