Look beyond the fancy paintwork to catch a glimpse of the next generation BMW 5 Series. These images are the latest to emerge of the new car, which will, according to sources, show styling that is dramatically tamer than its predecessor's. The next 5 will have softer lines and more conventional headlights with a cleaner front end - much like the neater styling on the latest generation 7 Series launched here recently. In keeping with trends, the new 5 Series will also be larger than the car it replaces. However, despite a wheelbase that will reportedly grow by nearly 10 cm, the overall car will be longer by just 2 cm and the front overhang will be shorter. The car's height will be slightly reduced and width increased for greater dynamic appeal. Beneath the bonnet, this 5 Series should use a range of existing BMW petrol and turbodiesel engines. The base model will likely be powered by a 2.5-litre straight six engine while the current 4.8-litre V8 is expected to power the models in the upper ranges. And, of course, work is also underway to produce a more powerful version of the 5.0-litre V10 for the next M5 super sedan.
