Audi's M6-hunter at the 'Ring

2009-04-20 08:53

A prototype of the upcoming Audi RS5 has again been spotted, this time blitzing around the Nürburgring doing handling tests.

While there aren’t too many visual clues indicating this is the RS5 - the oval tailpipes would be too obvious - this prototype's beefed-up front skirt does provide a very important piece of the puzzle. The production model will feature the signature RS twin oval tailpipes, though.

It also remains unclear just what sort of firepower the super coupe will pack.

However, it has been suggested that it will be powered by the same 426-kW bi-turbo V10 that was recently made available in South Africa in the RS6 sedan.

There is no word yet on when the RS5 will debut.

Another thing, maybe with the twin turbo V8 will the RS5 be priced around 750K but with the twin turbo V10 , comes a more expensive engine, gearbox, electronics (safety and driving aids), ECU, suspension etc. So im sure the price will reach the R1m bracket. Remeber Audi is not some backyard mechanic that only cares about how much power output they can produce.

at Wayne, u still don't get it. Its not a price issue , its a power issue. Making the RS5 to powerful will kill R8 sales especially in V8 guise. Audi would rather have you buy R8's than RS5's as the profit margin would surely be more.

@ Shark Precisely, so how can they price the RS5 in the same range as the RS6 and R8? Quite simply they can't!

The ignorance of some people is really amazing. RS models compete with M models and AMG models. S models are "trim packages and sometimes have higher engine output. I LOVE BMW. Also look at MERC and AUDI. Thing is, ignorant RUNTS seem to always argue over invalid points. Yes, you should be allowed to DEFEND and SHOWCASE your brand of preferance. But please dont insult the rest of us BMW supporters by acting like children. Are you?

POACHER - Turbos or N/A, doesn't matter, the RWD cars will still always suck if the conditions aren't perfect ie: crap surfaces, rain etc.... YES, RWD is by far the most fun, but the tyres get shredded, and if you try have fun on normal roads, the RWD cars will meet with the lamp posts and trees a lot easier than AWD. With the Quattros you can throw them around no matter what the weather or road conditions are like...come rain, snow or sand. So in other words BOTH BMW and AUDI are ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT in their own right. Me, I'll take AUDI, coz the only place with perfect roads, is the track. True?

DW- the reason Audi uses turbo's will be the same reason that the new M3 will run the 335i and not the V8 anymore, emissions. Turbo's make the engine more efficient thus lower emissions, this is also why VW are running small capacity motors with Turbo's or superchargers or both. I rememeber when BMW fanatics SWORE that BMW will NEVER run charged motors, that they have the BEST normally apsirted motors in the world, my how we forget. Now, they sing the tune look at our TWIN TURBO 335i..WOW...LMAO...come on guys...BMW's claim to fame, REAR WHEEL DRIVE POWER...Audi's claim, QUATTRO...they both EXCELLENT brands....just approaching the same "problem" from different angels.

@ jackey. Your ignorance is killing me. You said "the only reason Audi brought out the RS4 is coz the old S4 V8 was no match to the E46 straight 6.." Audi does not make the RS4 but Quattro GmHB. Quattro gmbh is limited company responsible for its own profit and loss and reports to audi has their primary shareholder, just like M-Division is. Quattro is a small company relatve to the M-devision. They so small that they can only build one type car at a time. When Quattro GmBH launched the r8 they had to build another factory just for that and now they can do 2 types of cars at a time. Therefore the reason what you have the RS6 now and the RS4 discontinued because of the small nature of the company. The S4 is made by Audi and not by Quattro. The S series is just what Audi calls their top of the range model and has no reference to being a motorsport car. So it cannot compete against a M car.

You know, every single time an Audi comes up for review it comes down to the same old thing. Why not just give a little credit where it's due? I'll tell you why - its the same reason so many people (writer included) refuse to consider buying a BMW - your typical Fast & Furious "I'll moer you stukkend my china" mentality characteristic of the droves of second-hand BMW owners over-revving their way around our streets.

Lets use the scenario where it will get 426kw (which I doubt as its been well documented that it will only get about between 330kw and 350kw), in this scenario Audi will shoot themselves in the foot, not only will it eat up the M6 (purely on power, we all know BMW’s are better precision cars), but it will also embarrass bigger bro R8 V10. This would thus steal sales from the R8. The RS5 would also then be probely price over R1m if you consider the normal R8 price and RS6 price, thus it would be in direct firing line with the likes of Porsche GT3, Audi R8 V10 (Sibling rivalry) and not to mention Godzilla. Now if it’s the more likely 330kw-350kw then its an M3 competition, faster in every regard (an more expensive) except in the corners. Now as an M6 rival well all I can say is that it will be better than the M6 (yes even in 350kw), the M6 is pathetic for a BMW M Car. I hope with the next M6 BMW makes it more lighter and agile and with a better Gearbox please. But between the M3 and this, it will be close. Nonetheless it’s a beast. Bring it on.

@0000...the only reason Audi brought out the RS4 is coz the old S4 V8 was no match to the E46 straight 6 hence it came out @ the end of its cycle..They had to resort to getting more power out of the failed S4 just to beat the M3, now that bush engineering !!! They cant compete on equal grounds..And it was long rumoured that the next M3 (E92) would be V8 coz BMW has manged to squeez every last bit of KW's from the M3 CSL 3.2l (265kW) not even Porshe can manage that so do not say that BMW followed Audi's route in getting V8's for the next M3 and by the way MO has clearly defined Audi..So Audi Groupies get used to the fact that BMW will ALWAYS be the benchmark....

@Anonymous 3:32pm. You are talking about the RS4 that came out years later to take on the E46 M3 after the S4 could not do the job. Never mind the fact that it was a V8 going against a straight 6. I heard an RS4 at full bore on Saturday, oh boy, what a great sound. Pity Audi insist on making "family" cars. Driving dynamics are sacrificed for rear-passenger legroom (by moving the engine as far forward as possible). Surely one can buy say a Golf Gti to cart around daily. I love BMW for their non-compromise approach to handling, even an X5 is a Nurburgring graduate. Also BMW and MB don't build their cars to a price, Audi always approach the battle with price as their major weapon (A4 price-competing with 1-series) and great interiors (I would love to have some of those in my living room, LOL)

BMW people - I like your brand, but I like AUDI more! Do yourselves a favour, go test drive a BMW of any kind, and see how much attention you draw. You'll realise not too much coz every BMW, as good as what they are, is just another BMW. But go test drive an A5 of any kind, and you'll notice everybody looking and staring, coz it's rated as one of THE most beautiful cars ever designed. The BMW's might be quicker on a track, but on everyday roads where the surfaces change, the BMW battles, and then lets rather not mention what happens to those rear wheel drive cars in the wet weather, and yes we live in SA where it rains rather often. AUDI will always be the better all-rounder.

Competitor to the M6? No sure about that. The A5 range competes with the 3 series coupe. . But in actual fact maybe it will beat the m6 even if in a different class. Afterall the M6 was the most overhyped car ever and the car that dissapointed the most. When it was first launched every journalist was anticipating something to hit the competition for a six as it came with carbon fibre roof, V10 engine etc(which was revolutionary for its time) and it was BMWSs first car to smash the R 1million mark. For Million rand people expected an explosion. The saddest part of it all the M6 could hardly even beat it heavier sibling the M5 at the time of launch which was over R200K cheaper. The only good thing was the engine as handling was not BMW like. Journalist still ranked the car behind the Porsche carrera, Vantage and Audi R8 and all of them had smaller less powerful engines. And the m6 faded in the background with hardly any magazine raving about it. It hardly performed on the nuringburg ring at all. If there is ever going be another M6 I hope its not dissapointing as this one. So the RS5 might actually be the only choice I guess for a raw power coupe.

What a car! But somehow Audi just cant get it right in the handling department. Saw an episode of Fith Gear the other day where they have an S5 (V8 250 odd kw, quattro 4wd) against a BMW 335i (6 pot, 225kw twin turbo, rwd). On paper, the Audi should have the Beemer beaten, in reality though, the BWM was half a second faster around the track and thats purely on handling, razor sharp turn-in, exceptional steering feedback etc. So I guess this will be ferocious, but will it beat an M6 around a track? Maybe purely because of the extra power, but that doesn't mean its a better car, IMO.
