Funky new lil' big Suzi

Suzuki has unveiled its latest offering, a new compact SUV concept called the iV-4, at the 2013 Frankfurt auto  show.

FRANKFURT, Germany - The Japanese automaker known for its SUV models since 1970 has unveiled its next one at the 2013 Frankfurt auto show.

Suzuki introduced the LJ series in 1970 and the automaker has only expanded its SUV line-up since then with the Vitara in 1988, Jimny in 1998 and Grand Vitara in 2005. Now there’s the iV-4.

It's built around a theme called "Grab your field". The automaker says the new SUV has a powerful exterior design and is as tough and rugged as an SUV should be. The iV-4 is designed to be customised into a car suited for the driver’s lifestyle. Suzuki says “i” stands for individuality, “V” for vehicle, and “4” for four-wheel-drive.

The automaker says traditional SUV design traits include straight, sleek lines, a clamshell bonnet, five-slotted front grille, fog lights with built-in laser sensor on the roof and an illuminated grille.

The car is 4.21m long x 1.85m wide x 1.66m high with a 2.50m wheelbase. Then there are 20” rims and tyres and a wide range of exterior parts, colours and textures.

PRODUCTION PLANS

Suzuki also says the car will come with AllGrip, the next generation of 4WD technology, making it “a  combination of design and off-road performance that goes beyond a typical city SUV".

Production plans are set for the Magyar Suzuki plant in Esztergom, Hungary, in 2015 and will be releasing it in Europe.

A spokesperson for Suzuki SA said: “We will definitely study it for South Africa as soon as production is announced in 2015.”

When the production model based on the iV-4 is launched Suzuki will introduce completely new possibilities into the SUV segment.
