Fundi Challenge: New rules for '13

South Africa's 4x4 Fundi Challenge is changing focus from individuals representing themselves and certain clubs to a more direct club focus.

It will now be known as the Bridgestone 4x4 Club Challenge, says organiser, Daniel Barbosa.

“The new approach will include an in-house club challenge for clubs nominated to participate in the 2013 Challenge,” he said, adding that participants needed to belong to a nominated club to enter.

STILL ABOUT ENTHUSIASTS

Each event will be organised by a specific club "to ensure high standards of environmental care and 4x4 driving ethics" and to provide a wide diversity of challenges, among them obstacle events and GPS and trail-based tests.

"Even with the changes to the format," Barbosa said, "the event will still be about 4x4 enthusiasts displaying their driving skills in standard vehicles and high standards will be maintained.

“We want to create vehicle and family-friendly events that are safe for the participants and spectators. To meet these goals, we've identified 10 clubs that will each  host a Challenge event in 2013,” he added.

Barbosa named the clubs and event dates:
Feb 16 2012 - Suzuki Auto Club
Mar 16 - Mercedes Benz SA Club – G-Xtreme Club
Apr 6 - Nissan 4x4 Club
May 18 - Isuzu Offroad Club
Jun 8 - Community Forum & TuffStuff
Jul 21 - McCarthy 4x4 Club
Aug 3 - Lichtenburg 4x4 Club
Sept 22 - Jeep Club SA 21st
Oct 5 - Land Rover Owners Club
Oct 26 - 4x4 Off-road Adventure Club
Nov 17 - Bridgestone Finals

The top three teams from each Challenge will earn go for annual honours in the 2013 final in November.

“The new system will allow more people to take part in the challenge,” Barbosa said. “The action will be screened on DStv’s Ignition TV as a series, kicking off in the second half of the year."
