Ford duo wrap 2013 SA rally title

With one round to left, Mark Cronje and Robin Houghton have retained their 2012 National Rally champions’ crown following the 2013 Polokwane Rally. As Ford puts it: "They won the last stage, won the rally, and won the championship!"

The 2013 South African Rally Championship race is over as Ford S2000 Fiesta drivers Mark Cronje and Robin Houghton have an unassailable lead following the 2013 Polokwane Rally.

FORD PAIR DOMINATES

The duo achieved six wins from seven starts, including four in a row. With one round left in the championship, which takes place in George on November 15/16, the pair can earn five in a row for a total of seven wins in the 2013 season.

Along with three stage wins from six in Polokwane on October 18 2013, the Ford crew added a further three on October 19 to claim six fastest times from 11 stages. The pair were second fastest in the remaining stages.

Ford said: "They won the last stage, won the rally, and won the championship!"

Cronje said: “The second day of the rally was really great – we knew we couldn’t be beaten and so we went all out. The pressure for the championship was off, but we wanted to retain the lead on the event and make it four wins on the trot, so Robin and I were deadly serious once we entered the stage.

“There is no doubt that the Ford Fiesta is the best rally car I’ve ever driven. It really suits my driving style, and we’ve put together a team which is exceptional in every way to ensure success. It has been an honour to compete on behalf of the Ford dealers this year and everywhere we’ve competed they’ve been unbelievably supportive. We hope to bring them another crown at the end of 2014!”
