JOHANNESBURG - Nearly 700 people have been killed in crashes on South Africa's roads since the beginning of December 2012., the Road Traffic Management Corporation reported on Dec 18, 2012.
The corporation said there had been 564 crashes resulting in 676 dead between December 1-18, 2012.
PREVIOUS YEARS
The same period in 2011 saw just under 600 road deaths - included 19 people killed in just one horrendous collision between a taxi and car in the northern Free State - so the 2012 number is startlingly up despite all the government's efforts at instilling 'road safety' into drivers' minds.
A spokesman said: "Comparison with previous years fatalities cannot be done at this stage as all crash reports have not been captured and because South Africa now follows the 30-day World Health Organisation standard for fatalities.
A total of 1149 people were killed on South Africa's roads between December 1 and December 28 in 2010 and 1304 were recorded for the same period in 2009.
