Toyota, Tesla team up for RAV4 EV
New partners Toyota and electric carmaker Tesla have announced an agreement to develop an electric version of the RAV4 SUV.
The prospect of a jointly-developed electric car was initially raised in May this year when Tesla’s Elon Musk and Toyota’s Akio Toyoda inked a deal that saw the Japanese manufacturer buy a $50 million stake in Tesla.
At the time, Tesla and Toyota also agreed to cooperate on the development of electric cars, parts and production systems.
The companies aim to have the electric RAV4 on sale in the US by 2012. Prototypes will use an existing RAV4 body and team it with a Tesla electric powertrain. The first prototype is currently undergoing testing, the companies stated in a media release.
