Car2go, a division of Daimler's Stateside operations, has confirmed
that San Diego will be the first American city to have a fully electric
vehicle car-sharing programme.
The city’s all-electric car2go programme will start at the end of 2011 with 300 Smart fortwo electric drive vehicles.
TECHNOLOGY ALLOWING EASY LOCATION
All Smart Fortwo electric vehicles will be equipped with the latest car2go telematics technology, allowing users to locate, pick up or drop off vehicles via a smartphone application or the internet. Clever.
It provides them with the option to rent the vehicles without worrying about a specific return time or location.
The programme is reported to be successful in four cities around the world with more than 40 000 users and 1000 Smart fortwo vehicles with low-emission engines.
Think of it as an American parallel to the European bike-swapping programme so popular in many Continental cities, but without the inconvenience of getting wet when it rains.
CAN TRAVEL 134KM ON ONE CHARGE
The Smart Fortwo electric drive is powered by a 30kW electric propulsion system.
It is said to be economical, quiet and emission-free. The lithium-ion batteries can be recharged at designated EV charging stations.
On a single charge, the
car can travel up to 134km.
Battery recharging time from 20% to 80% of battery full capacity takes three and a half hours and a full recharge takes eight hours, making overnight charging possible.
The electric car2go vehicles will be charged at Blink EV charging stations developed by California-based technology provider ECOtality.
About 1000 Blink commercial charging stations could be installed by end of 2011 for use in San Diego.
