LOS ANGELES, US - Nine children were injured on Wednesday, four seriously, when a 101-year-old motorist ploughed into them outside a Los Angeles school.

One was only four years old, local KTLA TV reported from outside Main Street Elementary School in south Los Angeles just after the children were dismissed for the day.

'BRAKES FAILED, I THINK'

Two adults were also injured. LA Fire Department paramedics were at the scene and all 11 people injured were taken to hospital.

The driver, Preston Carter, was interviewed on TV cameraman just after the crash.

Carter said: "Well I lost control of the car, the brakes failed, I think. I was backing off the car park, to go home, and lost control.

"I'm sorry, I have sympathy for them. I wouldn't do that for anything on Earth... because the man that rules Earth, he knew I wouldn't have done it," he told the TV station.
