MALELANE, Mpumalanga - Three children were fatally injured when a driver lost control of his car while apparently drag-racing near here on Friday night.
He hit 12 youngsters at Goba Village, east of Malelane, an Mpumalanga community safety department spokesperson said on Saturday.
"It is alleged that the driver was drag-racing," he said. "Three childen were critically injured and later died at Tonga Hospital."
'HARSH ACTION NEEDED'
The other nine children had minor injuries and are recovering in hospital.
Mpumalanga community safety MEC Vusi Shongwe condemned reckless and irresponsible driving and asked that the criminal justice system send a message that reckless and negligent driving would not be tolerated.
"We need to deal harshly with irresponsible drivers who want to turn our roads into killing fields," he said. "The law must take its course."
The driver was arrested on Friday night and will appear in court soon. Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide and reckless driving.
