Cycling SA condemns Sea Point attack

CAPE TOWN - Cycling South Africa has expressed horror and disgust about the mobbish behaviour of a group of cyclists who attacked a van driver and his passenger in Sea Point near the city centre on Sunday (Mar 2 2014).

The organisation said in a statement issued on Monday after a video of the group's despicable behaviour went viral on YouTube and on Wheels24: "Cycling SA condemns this type of behaviour in the strongest way possible and in no way condones or accepts this type of behaviour."

The video, taken by a passing car driver who added his report on the incident to the YouTube video, shows how the cyclists argue with the driver of a double-parked white Toyota van. One cyclists picks up his bicycle and repeatedly thrusts a wheel through the open driver's window.

'CANNOT BE JUSTIFIED'

Another rider throws punches through the window and a third sprays what appears to be pepper-spray at the van's occupants. The van was said to be double-parked while the volunteers collected rubbish left from a street foot-race held the previous day.

"This reaction towards a motorist cannot be justified in any manner whatsoever, whatever the circumstances," CSA said. "There is just no place for such behaviour in our sport."

The association was in touch with the cycling club responsible to identify the individuals involved, and would take "immediate action" against them. They are likely to be banned from this weekend's annual Argus cycle race in the city.

The van's occupants reported the matter to the Sea Point police, the video-taker also went to give his version of events and CCTV video from the city's street cameras has been forwarded too.
