Renntech claims to be the world’s foremost AMG tuner.

This, of course, begs the question: How can one can be a tuner’s tuner? We’ll forgive Renntech's muddled logic and rather focus on the Floridian outfit’s latest AMG-based offering.

SEMA show stopper

Two weeks hence Renntech will show off in Los Angeles what may be the world’s craziest C63 AMG derivative yet.

By adding a composite splitter up front, proper boot-lid spoiler and bulking-up the C63’s overall look with a wide-body styling kit, Renntech’s C74 Konzept is the company’s show-stopper for the famous Sema auto show.

Although the C74 moniker may have AMG acolytes all excited by at the prospect of 7.4 litres of Affalterbach-tuned V8 the M156 series engine in fact remains at 6.2. Renntech has replaced most of the V8’s key performance bits, though.

Airflow has been improved with a composite air box and low-resistance filters of Renntech’s own design; 82mm throttle bodies are serviced by immaculately machined cylinder heads that have been ported and polished.

A reprogrammed ECU harmonises the induction modifications to operate with a more liberal camshaft duration and it all results in a monumental surge in power.

If you think AMG's technicians did well by coaxing 420kW from the M156 V8 for Mercedes-Benz’s SLS supercar, then prepare to be humbled by the C74’s 445kW turning point on the dynamometer graph.

Big numbers

Accompanying the gain of more than 100kW over the series C63’s V8 is 752Nm.

To contain this epic increase in available engine output, Renntech added a limited-slip rear differential (100% lock-up functionality) to ensure optimal traction and a remnant of stability when putting down the power mid-corner.

The car is capable of running to 328km/h so Renntech’s C74 has larger 386mm rotors actuated by six-pot callipers behind each of its forged aluminium wheels to ensure secure deceleration from speeds beyond 300km/h.

At R208 000 (C63 AMG donor car not included), is the C74 simply a silly indulgence? Especially considering AMG’s already done a pretty decent job of making the C63 look as menacing (and go as quickly) as possible - particularly when dressed up with one of the factory go-faster packages.

Well, if your aim in life is to spoil your brother-in-law's day whenever he comes over for a braai driving his SLS - then the C74 probably does represent rather good value...
