GTO. The acronym gets any Ferrari enthusiasts’ mind racing to the early 1960s, when the Italian racing team built arguably its greatest road-racer.

Blessed with a particularly sweet, front-mounted 3-litre V12 producing 225kW, the 250 GTO featured classic styling lines, and although the original production run – 33 versus 39, depending how highly you regard Italian bookkeeping – was extraordinarily limited, the legend is boundless.

Expect to debit your current account by about R50 000 000 to get your hands on a 250 GTO today.

What about a contemporary GTO? Well, Dutch engineering consultancy and bespoke coachbuilder Vandenbrink – not an East-Rand panel beating concern – has a GTO design study ready for the making.

Industrial engineering genius Michiel van den Brink utilises a Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano as the design base.

Sporting probably the best front-engine, rear-wheel drive chassis available today, the Fiorano has all the essential V12 performance characteristics which made the original GTO into the stuff of legend – bar of course a doubling in engine capacity.

All aluminium

The Vandenbrink GTO features a handcrafted aluminium body, retaining only the A-pillars and front window from the stock GTB.

Aluminium fabricating master, Alwin Hietbrink, is responsible for shaping the body, and with its bulbous rear wheel arches, elongated front light-cluster accents and tapered rear, it’s a dead-ringer for the original GTO.

Three menacing air intakes sit above the front grille, and the bonnet itself has a distinctive central power dome.

Hietbrink’s work is masterful, and the uncanny GTO heritage he has managed to massage into the bodywork is an ode to his renowned restoration reputation with regards to classic Ferrari’s.

Beneath the exquisitely shaped bonnet nestles V12 power, in either 6-litre or a slightly more mischievous 6.3-litre state of tune.

Quick enough?

Performance is set to be epic, as the Vandenbrink cars are pretty trim. Weighing in at only 1 500kg, the 6-litre, 485kW, version is indecently quick (0-100kmh in 3.6 seconds), whilst the 6.3-litre, with 559kW available, is simply immorally fast – 1-100km/h in 3.4 seconds.

Top speeds are intergalactic. The 599 GTO touches 330km/h while the 630 GTO runs on to 350km/h.

Available in six colours – including black, blue and a garish bronze – those five, lucky, Vanderbrink buyers will hopefully be sober, sensible, billionaires with a sense of heritage and order their cars in red.

With an aforementioned production run of only five vehicles residuals should rival platinum as a long term investment.

So, if uncle Trevor gave you a nice SARS refund and you don’t know what to do with it, drop by their offices at Bloemgracht when you’re in Amsterdam.

You’d better hurry though, those five production GTOs are going to have signatures next to them very soon.
