SOLAR POWER CHALLENGE: The 5400km challenge will see solar cars depart on a two-week journey around SA over varying terrain in cars that have been designed by participating teams.

Teams from around the world will compete in the Sasol Solar Challenge, the South African leg of the international solar car challenge.

The event is held every two years, hosted by Motorsport South Africa and the International Automobile Federation and will run from September 18-28th 2012 with 12 local and international teams.

5400KM JOURNEY

Competitors design, build their vehicles and drive them over a 5400km course.

The competition also serves as a practical and engaging application of maths, science and technology, exposing students to the opportunities of a potential career.

Henry Loubser, managing director of Sasol New Energy, said: “South Africa has an abundance of sunshine and we are evaluating options to harness this power.

“Sasol New Energy focuses on developing options and technologies for a carbon-constrained world.  Developing alternative energy technologies, such as solar, adds to Sasol’s expanding new energy portfolio and will in turn contribute to the country’s transition to a low carbon economy.”
