SPIED: Ford Fiesta facelift

2012-03-09 12:35

Ford’s popular Fiesta hatchback has been around since 2008. To ease its mid-life crisis the US automaker has given the Fiesta a facelift. Check out our spy shots!

Ford’s Fiesta hatchback has been around since 2008 and is due for a mid-cycle facelift. Our spies captured images of a new face lifted model undergoing testing in Northern Europe.

The lack of camouflage on the prototype suggests that this will only be a minor update, with only the front-end expected to receive changes.

At the front you can spot a new headlight design incorporating diodes and a much sharper design. The new facelift will probably resemble the design seen on the Ford EcoSport crossover, which itself is based on the Fiesta.

As for the engine line-up, expect the current four-cylinder offering to be expanded with the addition of a high-performance 1.6 EcoBoost engine in the 2013 Fiesta ST as well as a new three cylinder one-litre engine.
One of our spy photographers spotted a vehicle logbook inside the prototype. Its cover sheet revealed that the prototype was packing a 1.0 “GDI” capable of 60kW. GDI is short for gasoline direct injection, suggesting that Ford will offer its Fiesta with non-EcoBoosted three-cylinder engines.

The sporty Fiesta ST will be available in both three and five-door guise, and will deliver 132kW to its front wheels. The engine will be mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

The Fiesta facelift and ST will be debuted later in 2012.
