Johannesburg - A cash box exploded in a Volvo in Orlando West, Johannesburg, metro police said.
The occupants abandoned the car in the middle of the road, spokesperson superintendent Wayne Minnaar said. Nobody was injured.
Minnaar said the box contained an explosive substance and usually detonates when someone tries to force the box open, staining the money with ink.
The blast happened on the Klipspruit Valley Road.
Motorists were urged to use alternate routes as the blue Volvo was blocking the road.
