Amazing Marc! Spanish win tops record

TIM HANLON

VALENCIA, Spain - Newly crowned MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez won the season-ending Valencia MotoGP on Sunday to set a new record of 13 victories in a year.

The 21-year-old Spaniard led from the 11th lap on his Honda and crossed the line in a time of 46min39.627  ahead of pole-starter Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) and his own team mate Dani Pedrosa.

Earlier in the day Marquez younger brother Alex won the Moto3 race.

TYRE CHANGE MISTAKE

Italian Rossi continued his strong finish to the season and guaranteed himself second place in the Riders' (see points below) championship after Jorge Lorenzo retired from the race having fallen back to 18th.

Lorenzo decided to change tyres with the threat of rain but the move failed to pay off as the rain petered out - and so did his challenge.

Marquez clinched his second successive MotoGP title in Japan in October and has now beaten the record for victories in a season which he shared with Australian Mick Doohan who won 12 races in the 1997 season.

Full race report shortly; Moto2 results later.
