It's making its debut at the 2014 Geneva auto show and will go into production in 2015.

Alfa Romeo said:  "The Spider takes full advantage of the ultra-rigid construction and distinctive design of the coupé to produce a Spider in the truest Alfa Romeo tradition. This vehicle brings the driving experience into sharper focus by allowing the sounds and sensations of it's performance."

The Spider weighs slightly more than the Alfa Romeo 4C coupé, Alfa said the use of carbon-fibre roll-over bars, spoilers and windscreen frame, as well as the adoption of a light canvas top and the replacement of the glass rear do not compromise it. As a result, the additional weight of the open-top transformation has been limited to about 60kg.

CARBON TAILPIPES

The stance of the 4C Spider has been evolved to ensure high levels of aerodynamic efficiency and down-force, resulting in impressive high-speed stability while minimising the turbulence in the cabin.

The Spider also has a new exhaust system with titanium and carbon tailpipes by Akrapovic, a company which produces racing exhaust for numerous motorcycle classes, among them MotoGP and Superbikes.

A key feature of the new exhaust is an electric valve system which can improve performance and enhance the exhaust note at the push of a button.

A new four-cylinder aluminium 1750cc turbopetrol engine, drives the rear wheels via a six-speed, dual clutch  gearbox. Perfomance: 0 to 100km/h 4.5 seconds top speed of 250km/h. The 40:60 front:rear weight distribution, was not affected by the soft-top conversion.

The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider will drive on new alloy wheels sporting a set of  Pirelli tyres.
