GRIM TOLL ON SA ROADS

Nigeria and South Africa are recorded to have the highest fatality rates with 33.7 and 31.9 deaths per 100 000 population per year, respectively in comparison to Australia’s 5.2 and New Zealand’s 9.1 per 100 000 population per year.

Cartrack teamed-up with Fury Motor Group to provide support to Netcare 911’s Rapid Intervention Unit which offers assistance and support at a time when road crash victims and emergency services personnel need it most.

Cartrack released the following road safety tips:

1 Avoid speaking on your phone while driving
2 Do not speed
3 Speed reduces the time needed to react to dangerous situations
4 Pay attention to road signs and markings
5 Speed reduces your ability to avoid objects on the road and increases the severity of a crash
6 Rest before your trip
7 Avoid road rage
8 Have your car serviced regularly
9 Have emergency numbers handy

The Rapid Intervention Unit has become the support for paramedic and fire personnel complete with extrication capabilities and support vehicles. It operates independently from medical and rescue vehicles and provides assistance in rescue operations.

SAFETY IS IMPORTANT

Fury Motor Group's risk and credit manager, Peter De Kock, said: "There is no charge to the public for the services rendered by the unit. Our priority is to provide quality emergency support."

The road crash support vehicle will be stationed along the N3 route to Kwazulu-Natal at the Van Reenen’s Pass over the Easter long weekend – a hot spot for crashes - and will attend to any incidents in the vicinity.
