800 Mazda MX-5's target record

MAZDA'S ON PARADE: Mazda's previous record gathering of MX-5 roadsters was set in Germany in 2010. The automaker will attempt to smash its record with 800 MX-5 in June 2013.

Mazda is hoping to attract hundreds of MX-5 owners to help smash the record for the largest gathering of its products.

The event is called IMAX-5 2013 and hopes to have 800 MX-5 roadsters in Lelystad, Netherlands.

The automaker’s previous record of 459 was set in Essen, Germany, in 2010.

BEST-SELLING ROADSTER

The MX-5, launched in 1989, is the best-selling roadster to date with total sales approaching a million.

The MX-5 has seen three generations (NA, NB and NC) and many special editions. The first MX-5 was offered with a 1.6 four-cylinder engine, the second-generation had a 1.8.

The third and current generation is offered with a 126kW two-litre  engine.
