CAPE TOWN - The Porsche Boxster has been named 2013 South African Car of the Year, the first Porsche to win the competition began in the 1980's.
The SA competition has for the past few years been based on the European Coty points-based scoring system but is unique in that each finalist, 12 vehicles in 2012, is also put through a series of tests at the Gerotek Vehicle Testing Facility west of Pretoria.
FIRST PORSCHE TO WIN
The competition claims to reward automotive excellence and the winning vehicle must score highly in its own class, not against the other finalists.
The competition is organised by the SA Guild of Motoring Journalists. Hyundai's stunning Elantra claimed the title in 2012.
The BMW 320i, Toyota 86, and Ford Ranger were arguably the strongest contenders for the title since they represent the biggest improvements and are the best buys in their respective segments.
A parallel Wheels24 Coty voting poll open to the public and eventually taking a total of 19 431 votes was won by the Ford Ranger.
In March, the Volkswagen Golf was named the 2013 European Car of the Year.

The Porsche Boxster? Really Coty judges? While we can agree the Boxster is a phenomenal machine we're not sure the general public would agree, least of all our readers.
Wheels24 readers don't share the judges' sentiments: the Boxster came only seventh in our readers' Coty with 618 votes.
Topping the list with a whopping 6431 votes was Ford's powerhouse Ranger double-cab. Since its launch in 2012, the Ranger has become a sales success for the US automaker and the majority of readers agree. The SA-built Ranger is arguably the most capable of the premium bakkies in SA.
In second place was Kia's Rio with 3745 votes followed by the BMW 3 Series (2106) and Hyundai i30 (1791) in third and fourth place respectively.
In last place was Toyota's Yaris HSD.

1 Nissan Juke 1.6 DIG-T Tekna, because it's fun, frugal, family friendly and capable of modest off-tar travel.
2 Toyota 86 because it's the most fun vehicle of 2012 - and its price.
3 Hyundai i30 because of its looks and specs - and a hat trick of wins would be cool.

1 The Toyota 86 is the most exciting ride from the Japanese automaker in the past decade. It's stylish, fun to drive and priced well.
2 Lexus GS - I believe the automaker finally has a product that poses a threat to the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-class.
3 Nothing says “dare to be different” like the Nissan Juke. It’s fun to drive and rather spacious.
