Cape Town - The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has published information on the country's 746 978km road network.

According to Sanral, the total number of kilometres of paved roads within in SA is 158 124km, 21 946km of these routes are operated by Sanral. The rest, says Sanral, are divided up between each province, metro and municipality depending on which part of the country the road travels through.

10th largest road network in the world

There are 459 957km of gravel road and 131 919km of un-proclaimed gravel road (Public roads not formally gazetted by any authority) which takes the total close to 750 000km of roads in Mzansi.

Arrive Alive's Johan Jonck said: "Few people are aware of the fact that South Africa has the 10th largest road network in the world!

"The data from Sanral on the SA road network also emphasises the importance of not only focusing on our freeways but also to create awareness of safety when driving on gravel roads and aspects such as sharing the roads with trucks, tractors and other farming equipment.

"Many road fatalities occur among those in rural areas, i.e learners transported distances to school in less reliable vehicles along more hazardous roads - a fact we need not neglect when focusing on the safety of all South African road users."
