Volkswagen will launch its second-generation Up! at the 2016 Geneva auto show.

Cape Town - Volkswagen's Up! city car will be available in a more practical five-door configuration.

The three-door city car has been around in South Africa since February 2015.

In May 2016, the automaker will expand its local Up! range with the addition of a new version sporting extra doors and a crossover variant - the Cross Up!.

The entire range uses the same 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine (55kW), with trim levels starting with the aforementioned 'Take' specification and ending with the 'Colour' in the five-door range.

Prices start from R156 300 for the new five-door derivative available in three grades - Take Up!, Move Up! and Colour Up!

Up! range expands

Launching simultaneously will be a crossover version called the 'Cross Up'. The new model benefits from increased ride height (15mm), additional body-cladding and additional interior and exterior trim.

The Cross Up! has silver-side mirrors painted, anodised silver roof rails, black protective side-mouldings, foglights with chromed trim and 16" ‘Cross’ alloy wheels. The interior gains a leather steering wheel, exclusive ‘Cross’ seat trim in red or grey, coloured dash pad in black (standard) or red (optional) and scuff plates with ‘Cross’ lettering.

Standard safety features include four airbags, ESP, power steering, power windows (front), remote central locking and radio/CD.

The Cross Up! adds:

 • 16" Cross alloy wheels,
 • side mirrors in Light Silver and door handles painted in car colour
 • electric mirrors
 • leather covered steering wheel, electric windows (front)
 • height adjustable driver seat
 • leather steering wheel
 • Black protective side moulding (wheel arches, sills & doors)
 • Silver anodized roof rails
 • Coloured dashboard insert
