Need a hotter GTI? VW's new Clubsport S is headed for SA!

Cape Town - Volkswagen South Africa's most popular Golf derivative for the past three generations has been the GTI.

The superb Mk5, launched in 2005 used a 2.0-litre turbo and usable performance in a premium package. It offered supremely good value when launched.

The Mk6 and Mk7 took that recipe and like a Swiss watchmaker tweaked and improved it's formula to produce one of the best everyday hot hatches in the world.

Fast forward to 2016 and VW celebrates 40 years of the GTI with this: the Clubsport S. In May it broke the record for the fastest front-wheel drive car to lap the famed Nurburgring and it also boasts the most power of any GTI yet: 228kW/380Nm.

Clubsport launches in July

Hot hatch and GTI aficionados are eagerly awaiting the introduction of the 'normal' Clubsport, which we spotted in May. Wheels24 Janine Van Der Post is attending the local launch of the Clubsport in Cape Town on Friday (July 1).

Wheels24 can confirm that the Clubsport S will be available in SA albeit limited to 47 units. Volkswagen South Africa said there's "a high possibility" that it will arrive locally by November 2016.

The new model sees significant weight reduction, it has no rear bench and it's not equipped with air-conditioning!
