Cape Town - Volkswagen's Golf 7 has been on-sale in South Africa since 2013 and is a consistent performer in local sales.
In November 2016, the company has unveiled a major update for its popular hatchback.
The Golf forms part of, VW says, "new and greatest product offensive ever" with many new models planned from 2017.
Headed for SA
According to VWSA "The local launch is planned for the second quarter of 2017. We will most likely keep a similar model line up." Expect local details to emerge closure to its SA launch.
The updated Golf in enhanced throughout. Both the exterior and interior receive major tweaks while mechanically it gains new engines and an improved transmission.
The refreshed model also gains a new infotainment system and improved safety technology.

1. The new model will be about 70kg lighter than the current model
2. The “Discover Pro” infotainment system with gesture control sees what VW calls, the "interface of the future" make its debut in its compact class.
3. The complete range of infotainment systems has been redesigned and fitted with larger touchscreens.
4. New LED headlights replace all Xenon headlights for the 2017 Golf.
5. In terms of safety, it gains Traffic Jam Assist and Emergency Assist for the first time.
6. New generation of TSIs: 1.5 TSI Evo with 110kW and Active Cylinder Management makes its debut in the Golf.
7. Added performance for the Golf GTI: 169kW for the standard version and 180kW for the GTI Performance.
8. Newly developed seven-speed dual clutch gearbox (DSG) will gradually replace all six-speed DSGs for the Golf.
9. Front and rear sections with new bumpers. Full LED tail lights; animated indicators for the top-of-the-range version.
10. Range of online services expanded; “Guide & Inform” as well as “Security & Service” for models with a navigation system.

New 1.5-litre, three-cylinder diesel engines will form part of the revised engine line-up and should, theoretically, be very fuel efficient. It also complies with EU6 regulations.
A 1.5-litre petrol engine will produce 110kW and will feature cylinder deactivation and a coast function.
The GTI Clubsport could feature a 240kW version of the company's 2.0-litre engine.
The new car's head- and taillights feature energy-saving LEDs.
Inside, the automaker says, active info display features a 12" screen in front of the driver that also features 3D navigation. The top infotainment system, known as discover pro, features gesture control.
What about the GTI?
Volkswagen has also improved performance of the Golf GTI models with this update. With 169kW (an increase of 7kW), the standard version is now as powerful as the previous Performance version, while the power output of the new Golf GTI Performance has risen to 180kW.

Volkswagen has also developed a new seven-speed dual clutch gearbox (DSG). The new DSG will gradually replace all of the six-speed DSGs used in the Golf to date, helping to cut CO2.
