Volvo rolls out V40 R-Design

The new Volvo V40 R-Design will appeal to those who want a head-turner with a dynamic look. This hot-blooded variant of the Volvo V40 is due to reach South African shores in February 2013.

The new R-Design adds sportier styling elements to the just-launched V40 (Wheels24 drove it in June, 2012) aided, the automaker said, by a driver-centric interior and an agile driving experience.

'PRECISE PERFORMANCE'

The front features a framed high-gloss grille while at the rear an ironstone diffuser and twin exhaust tailpipes are also present. Metal details and five-spoke 18-inch diamond-cut wheels complete the look.

Lex Kerssemakers, senior vice president of product strategy and vehicle line management at Volvo Car Corporation said: "The V40 R-Design is designed around the performance-minded individual with a passion for things that add extra spice to life. The meticulous attention to detail covers the expressive design as well as the agile, precise performance.

"R-Design appeals especially to customers that love active driving and a personal, expressive design," Kerssemakers added.

When it comes to seats, customers will have a choice of Nubuk textile or full leather seats, embellished by an embroidered R-Design logo with a blue "R". Full leather seats are available as an option.

The driver environment also includes a specially designed steering wheel, gear shifter, handbrake and sport pedals. The cabin is finished black leather with aluminium detailing while the interactive dashboard has the ability to switch between three layouts with different configurations and functionality - Elegance, Eco and Performance.

The V40 R-Design rides on a sport chassis lower by 10mm compared with the standard Dynamic chassis.

The front McPherson struts have 25 mm piston rods enabling the structure to better absorb lateral loads, Volvo said.

Springs and shock absorbers have a firmer setting while at the rear the V40 has monotube dampers, featuring compression and return damping via the same valve.

Peter Mertens, senior vice president research and development at Volvo Car Corporation said: "The Sport chassis offers the enthusiastic driver a feeling of total control. You get both the connected response that makes a winding country road so much fun as well as the precise, nimble moves it takes to stay on top of busy urban traffic.”

In South Africa, the Volvo V40 order book has already been opened. The new five-door hatchback will be available for test drives at all Volvo dealerships from October 15 before going on sale on November 15, 2012.
