VW flirts with Golf VII R

2013-01-29 09:37

The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf will be launched in South Africa on January 31 2013 - we'll be there! - but VeeDub fans are already asking "What about the R version?"

Here's the answer: the German automaker has released its first (of many, to be sure) image of its Golf VII R concept.

However, instead of showing an indistinguishable close-up of the hot hatch it decided to take an esoteric path and froze the car in a block of ice.

216kW ON TAP

Despite its glacial camouflage, you can still spot (if you squint) the overall “R” styling.

Powering the car will be a 2.0 TFSI engine capable of 216kW mated to a six-speed manual or six-speed DSG gearbox. The engine will send power to all four wheels through a Haldex all-wheel-drive system but the urge will be limited to 250km/h

Thawing will begin in February and the official unveiling will be made at the 2013 Geneva International Motor Show.

Wheels24 will be covering the launch of the new Golf, so bookmark our New Models section to check out our upcoming launch report.

The car in the "ice cube" is more likely to be a Golf VI R Cabriolet... http://www.vwvortex.com/news/volkswagen-news/mystery-r-model-frozen-in-ice-isnt-golf-7-r/

      fredster.mania.5 - 2013-01-30 07:55

    Megane RS

      tieno.punzul - 2013-01-29 22:40

RS is a real brakpan brawler, so what if it is a second faster around a track than a GTI but go drive 100km with it your kidneys is kaput

      tieno.punzul - 2013-01-30 08:23

Ha ha William, awesome car but please stick to the topic at hand, hot hatches and not 1,4 mil cars

  • tieno.punzul - 2013-01-29 22:38

Hopefully this time the R will not be a 10year old S3 with a golf body. Jeez, I still cannot believe people forked out close to a half mil for them, bleddy rip off. Nee wat, I will take a GTI and boost the power up to 200kw, you don't need more than that and it is way cheaper

      de.stig.9 - 2013-01-30 15:33

      raath - 2013-01-30 15:34

      Merc is for old people...

      Threetimeschampions - 2013-01-30 21:59

Merc recon it has 260kw with a 0-100 in 5 seconds, a TT RS do it in 4.3 seconds, it will not cost much more than this crap

      Threetimeschampions - 2013-01-30 22:02
