VW Golf 4 GTI R

accreditation

At its heart is the 132kW 4-cylinder turbo-charged 1.8 engine introduced earlier this year.

VW claims that it will sprint from 0-100km/h in 7.9sec and top speed is 228km/h.

It is the styling that has been brought in line with that performance, with a comprehensive sports package being offered on a limited 150 units.

Racing type rear and front bumpers, side skirts and tailgate spoiler are the most obvious external changes to the standard GTI, with 17-inch alloy wheels being offered as standard.

A sports package is never complete without the sweet note emanating from the exhaust, and Volkswagen Racing have seen to this by fitting a sports type muffler with an silver sports tail pipe exiting out the bumper.

This is in contrast to the standard styling where the exhaust is virtually invisible.

Inside, brushed aluminium gives the GTI a sportier ambience. Brushed aluminium has been added to:

  • Climate control/radio system
  • Drinks holder
  • Diagnostic plug cover
  • Ashtray cover
  • Interior door handle trim covers

Fitted with Volkswagen Racing "R" inscription are:

  • Footrest cover
  • Pedal cover kit
  • Gear knob
  • Sports type leather bound steering wheel
  • Front carpet set

The GTI R is being offered in a choice of three colours, black, silver and red.

The retail price has been set at R251 640 and the car comes with Volkswagen's 3 year/120 000km warranty and five year/60 000 AutoMotion maintenance and service plan.
