Toyota's Avanza gets a facelift

The Avanza budget seven-seater MPV from Toyota sees slight cosmetic changes for 2009.

Engine details remain unchanged and the Avanza range continues to source its power from a 1.3-litre unit producing 67 kW at 6 000 r/min with a peak torque figure of 120 Nm at 4 400 r/min, or a 1.5-litre with 80 kW at 6 000 r/min and torque of 141 Nm at 4 400 r/min on tap.

Both engines are mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

As far as its functionality goes, the interior can be configured for different requirements and all the rear seats can be tumbled forward in various arrangements.

For 2009, interior revisions include the addition of a new dark grey trim to replace the unpractical beige trim used previously. Silver plating is added to the door arm rests on the range-topping 1.5TX for a more upmarket appearance.

Exterior changes include a ribbed roof design, body coloured door handles on all SX models and chrome handles for TX models, and green tinted windscreen glass on all models.

Luckily, even though Avanza is meant to be easier on the growing family's pocket, all models in the line-up have power windows all round, power steering, air conditioning, ABS brakes, airbags for the two front occupants, remote central locking and an immobiliser.

Prices:
Avanza 1.3 S - R123 300
Avanza 1.3 SX - R138 500
Avanza 1.5 SX - R146 200
Avanza 1.5 TX - R165 500

All Avanza models come with a four-year/60 000km service plan and a three-year/100 000 warranty.
