Specials and tweaks across BMW

BMW has announced a raft of changes across most of its model range, among them special 3 Series models, new 5 Series derivatives with better trim options and diesel power for its 6 Series stunners.

An impending major model change (the all-new BMW 3 Series sedan will be introduced in South Africa later in 2012) usually means one thing – Special Edition time! - to shift metal and BMW doesn’t disappoint with a selection of limited versions of its 3 Series Coupe and Convertible models.

Their mechanicals are untouched but here come cars packed with high-quality options inside and out and “edition” badging on chromed sill strips to match the cars’ chromed kidney grilles.

Bespoke upholstery and trim finishes co-ordinate with special paint jobs.

INDIVIDUAL, EXCLUSIVE, M SPORT?

The Individual 3 Series convertible has two contrasting colours for its hard top – black silver – to set off the 15 body colour colour finishes. The contrasting top can also be specified for M Sport models detailed below and the M3 Convertible.

The 'Exclusive' coupe and convertible will also get model-specific 18” V-spoked alloy rims and a number of paint options. Seats can be ordered in a special leather with contrasting grey stitching or black with white stitching.

The M Sport Edition ups the special models’ sporting prowess with an M Sport suspension, Silverstone paint (as on the M3) and 18” double-spoked alloy rims. The 3 Series Coupe can also be specified with an M rear spoiler.

The M edition also has sports seats and steering wheel and stainless-steel pedals with an aluminium footrest – each bearing the M insignia –  along with blue stitching for the upholstery and “M” piping.

The special edition Threes will variously be available in South Africa from December 2011 and January 2012.

MORE 5s: The 5 Series range adds extra petrol and turbodiesel power.

5 SERIES

BMW also announced updates to its 5 Series range in the form of a more-frugal 520d Efficient Dynamics sedan with CO2 emissions of 119g/km (not for South Africa) and additional petrol and turbodiesel derivatives.

The 520i and 528i are powered by a new four-cylinder, two-litre engine with twin-scroll turbochargers, direct fuel-injection, variable valve control and double-Vanos camshaft control. The engine develops 135kW/270Nm in the 520i and, with an increase in turbo boost and revised fuel injection, 180kW/350Nm in the 528i.

A new four-cylinder, two-litre, twin-turbo engine slots into the 525d where it develops 160kW/450Nm.

Z4

Furthermore, the Z4 range introduced to SA in 2009 with straight-six power has also been bolstered with the two new four-cylinder, two-litre petrol engines. The sDrive20i gets the 135kW/270Nm twin-turbo, the sDrive28i the 180kW/350Nm version.

A six-speed manual transmission is standard with both, an eight-speed auto is an option.

DIESEL FOR 6: Turbodiesel grunt makes its appearance in the sleek 6 Series.

6 SERIES

Its bigger brother 6 Series adopts diesel power in the form of a three-litre, twin-turbo, straight six producing 230kW/630Nm, the latter from 1500rpm in the 640d Coupe and Convertible, with standard eight-speed auto transmission.

The 6 Series will be available in mainly cosmetic M Sport trim - a bodystyling package and 19" alloy rims - and M Sport specification will be offered on the 5 Series Gran Turismo.

Increased specification across the range, including the flagship 7 Series, adds features such as a foot-operated boot release, updated head-up display, an extension of the BMW Night Vision feature and Eco Pro efficiency mode for some models.

The more-frugal 520d Efficient Dynamics and X1 xDrive20d Efficient Dynamics also announced will not be introduced in “hot climate countries” such as South Africa, BMW SA said. However, other additions to the respective ranges will go on sale in South Africa from December 2011 and January 2012.
