Special edition GTI arrives in SA

2012-02-16 08:53

The history of VW's Golf GTI dates back to 1976 when the first production GTI was assembled. The car has since become the world's most successful compact sports car.

Now a special edition Golf GTI Edition 35 pays homage to the success of this icon and its legendary status built over three decades. The new model has a two-litre turbocharged petrol engine, the same as that found in the Golf R and capable of 173kW and 300Nm, 18kW more than the standard GTI at 155kW.

Like the current Golf GTI, it has front-wheel drive with an electronic differential lock.

The engine is mated to either a six-speed manual or DSG auto and is capable of sprinting to 100km/h in 6.6sec with a top speed of 247km/h. The manual has a claimed fuel consuption of 8.1 litres/100km, the auto 8/100.

Exterior

The GTI Edition 35 has a style upgrade in the form of exterior changes including a new front bumper design, cornering lights and LED daytime running lights.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 35

SPECIAL EDITION GTI: V-Dub fans begin salivating! The GTI Edition 35 has arrived on our shores, though you'll probably have to wait six to eight weeks for delivery if you're thinking of ordering one of these hot hatches.

Other exterior changes include gloss black mirror housings, sill extensions, a '35 edition' badge placed prominently on each side, LED tail lights under dark plastic, an LED-illuminated licence plate and tinted rear glass. Alloy 18" rims with 225/40 tyres are standard.

Interior

The cabin of the special edition has been updated with a classic golf ball look to the gear shift, decorative strips and the 35 logo and seat belts etched in red stripes.

The '35' logo appears on each seat's backrest and all decorative seams of the new model's seat design are red.

WTF, Satnav - R28 860???? Thats almost 10% dep on a standard GTI!!!!!

      Kaizer - 2012-02-20 22:16

Sales are bad at the moment ?

  • Cyrus - 2012-02-16 10:57

And all of a sudden the Golf R has become redundant.

      petercarvell - 2012-02-16 12:40

Why do you say that? Does the Golf R not cost around R400k, only R15 000 more than this yet is way faster, 0-100 is 5.6 or something. I think Golf R has just become the bargain of the century compared to this.

      xolisa.boqwana - 2012-02-16 15:01

manual Golf R is R50k more, where do you get R15000 from?

      Cyrus - 2012-02-16 19:29

AT Petercarvell. Its a well known fact that the fwd GTi is more nimble thant the 4wd R

      petercarvell - 2012-02-17 02:26

Oh ok, I was just asking, I am not a Golf driver, but on Autotrader you can seem find my Golf R's for under R400k. And yes from what I have heard the GTI is still a better drive.

  • naolifant - 2012-02-16 11:07

    hello Liz...

  • Fredster - 2012-02-16 11:21

You have to pay for leather?

      Lungisa - 2012-02-16 12:01

and it will not come without it

      Peter - 2012-02-16 13:48

It comes with suede leather inner and normal leather outer, but an option is to have normal leather all over.

  • Adam - 2012-02-16 12:21

It's just a spiced-up GTi, it's overpriced, it's probably still not the fastest in its segment and you'll have to wait a hell of a long time to get hold of one...but I am SO f*%kin' excited they finally agreed to bring it to ZA!!! I don't care what anybody says about this car, I'll happily place an order.

      Lourens - 2012-02-17 08:15

Remember the satnav and towbar lol

      Adam - 2012-02-17 08:49

Who puts a towbar on a GTi?! Seriously dude

      Lourens - 2012-02-17 11:35

      f*%kin' excited people do...

      Adam - 2012-02-17 12:40

      Whatever dutchman

  • francoisswart0 - 2012-02-16 12:29

this is what all GTI's should look like, thank God they got rid of those standard Brakpan mags

  • Seja - 2012-02-16 12:54

...Who would have thought the day would arrive when one had to pay half-a-million Rand for a Volkswagen Golf??

      xolisa.boqwana - 2012-02-16 15:04

......Who would have thought we would one day pay R10 for a loaf of bread?

  • Peter - 2012-02-16 13:46

I was hanging on for the golf 7 GTI to replace my 5 but it looks like it will cost over 400K. 6 years ago a GTI was 250K. Scary

  • daveneethling - 2012-02-16 14:12

At that price a Guilietta QV or Megane RS are much better options. And they are more stylish and unique.

      Jeffrey - 2012-02-17 18:40

That's why i got one! Happy GQV driver

      Ryan - 2012-02-20 23:03

Guilietta, pretty car you can admire it when broken down at the side of the road, does it still come standard with an oil slick in ur driveway?give it a few extra km's and it will ;-)lol.. poor resale value, expensive parts,etc...RS250=hard ride(horrible for daily drive), crap cheap interior, expensive parts(out of m/p), poor parts availability from France, french so things WILL break, low resale....sure GTI not as quick as rs250, but its not meant to be a track car its a tourer,(GTI=grand tourer injection)its a sporty car that can be used comfortably for daily drive, good resale,9 out of 10 reviewers rate the GTI best overall.Comfort, enough speed, 4 doors, enough space in boot and back seats, most refined in segment, classy doesnt make you look like an extra from The Fast and the Furious. There is a reason why there are many GTI's on the road its the BEST OVERALL!Want a VW race car? There are many, amongst other VW race cars look out for upcomming WRC(World Rally Championship)2013/2014, Polo R going to be awesome, dominate just like the VW Touregs did in Dakar, and then of course in VAG(Volkswagen,Audi group) you have Porsche,Audi,Lambo,Bugatti etc performance speaks for its self. Each to his own,but for me, rs250 or GQV no thanks.....I'll have a GTI or other VA group car.

  • Adin - 2012-02-16 15:37

VW is becoming like the teutonic german three, everything is an option. It's just not good enough anymore.

  • Japer - 2012-02-16 15:44

Rather invest in the new Audi RS3, 250kw & 0-100 in 4.6sec. When you drive the RS3...its just 3...2...1 and bye bye GTI

      xolisa.boqwana - 2012-02-16 18:17

While we are in the business of investing in cars, why dont buy a RS5?????

  • Stig - 2012-02-16 15:57

Take the 340K and spoil yourself with the Megane RS, then renovate your house with the 110K. Drive the king of Front Wheel Drivin while living in the nice house.

  • Phoenix - 2012-02-16 21:48

How dissapointing has this brand become? In the 70s, GTI was iconic, out-accelerating the biggest BMW's of the time. Now they do 100 in 6.6s when everyone else are closer to, and breaking, the 5s mark? These cars should have been way faster. Sadly, modern GTIs are lame.

  • GarethS1mpson - 2012-02-17 01:35

    what a yawn car...i was hoping 35 meant a 3,5 litre engine

  • Pawel - 2012-02-17 03:43

Pine apple time for GTI owners...

  • Amanda - 2012-02-17 07:27

This is why I left VW after 16 years as a VERY loyal customer. Nothing comes standard in that car - every bloody thing is optional, oppose to other vehicles in the same class where everything is included, as well as a 100 000km service maintenance plan. I will stick with Mercedes from now on. Much better value for money than a Golf that's pricing almost R500 000 with extra's. Insane VW - riding on your name, loosing your loyal customers!

      Fredster - 2012-02-17 08:13

I cannot add anything to what you said...true words

      rpitschek - 2012-02-17 08:23

Well I just ordered a Scirocco and it comes with Leather, Cruise Control, Elecrtic and Heated Seats, Electric Windows, Rain Sensor, Duel Zone climate control, etc, etc, Nice Mags, a great engine and that AWESOME DSG Gearbox. Add Sunroof and Xenons and you get all that in a great looking car for 370k. As for the motorplan, add 16k and you get full cover up to 90,000km as opposed to Mercs staggered plan where you pay 20% after 60,000km, 30% after 75,000km and 50% after that. As a matter of interest I currently have a C180K and the last 2 services came to R 58,000.00!!! So good luck to you when your motor plan runs out. Finally, last week I saw a whole bunch of DEMO C180CGI (115kw) with Avantgarde pack and not much else for R405k and that still comes with that dog of a 6 speed auto. I'm quite happy with my choice thank you very much.

Anybody considering a Golf GTI might find this of interest: http://www.phforums.co.za/f42/dead-golf-6-gti-again-64679/#post868787 Nice new mags tho.

  • Jango - 2012-02-17 12:45

Looks the same as the previous models from the last 10 years. Yawn...

  • alu.ntsandeni - 2012-02-17 13:40

Who needs sat nav when you can have a tom tom?

      sizwev - 2012-02-21 11:45

OR- Intergrated SatNav looks neater and the screen is also bigger... Unless you're considering mounting a Galaxy 10.1 tab on your dash

  • rossouw.andre - 2012-02-17 14:00

Wow, thats amazing, you can have both radio options and satnav option all together. Wonder where they would put the two optional radios and the satnav

  • Kevin - 2012-02-21 16:42

guys only one car the OPC ....second megane and that is it whahahahah.

      Dean - 2012-03-05 09:22

OPC sucks man. Those cars might be faster than a GTI, but that is "ALL" they can do. You must remember when u buy a VW GTI, you are buying into history, you are buying more than just car. GTI isnt all about the best acceleration or top speed. Its about quality of the ride, quality of the car, spacious comfortable interior, longevity, gorgeous styling...and just the feel of owning a beautiful GTI (Which i do) ... So you can take your OPC and floor it everyday... and it will be dead in two years. My GTI will be driving past your OPC carcas every day on the highway.. and i will make sure to wave to it as i pass it :)

  • Dean - 2012-03-05 09:19

This is sexy indeed. But the Golf R (in that blue color) is still so much hotter :)
