Special Type R screams into SA

Honda's naturally aspirated Civic Type R screamer adds as a limited edition model in the form of the Type R Championship Edition.

Based on the blistering Type R, the front-wheel drive hot hatch becomes a true scorcher with the addition of a standard limited slip differential for greater confidence under cornering where it limits wheel spin and improves traction.

Other standard features new to the Championship Edition include an iPod USB connector and auxiliary input, auto-dimming rearview mirror, tyre pressure warning system, park distance control at the rear and impact sensing door locks that pop in the case of a collision and allow for the easier release of occupants.

Like the Type R, which is only offered in Milano Red and Nighthawk Black, this model's signature hue is the gleaming Championship White.

Mechanically, the Championship Edition is identical to the standard Civic Type R. As before, the high-revving 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine is in attendance, producing 148 kW at 7 800 r/min and 193 Nm at 5 600 r/min. A six-speed manual gearbox drives the front wheels.

This white lightning also sprints from 0 - 100 km/h in a claimed 6.6 seconds before topping out at 235 km/h.

Fuel consumption on the combined cycle is quoted as being 9.3 l/100 km while its CO2 emissions rating is 219 g/km.

The Type R Championship Edition celebrates Honda's numerous international motorsport accolades and costs R299 900 - just a touch more than the standard Type R's R290 900 price tag.
