Spark Campus has done its sums

General Motors South Africa has created a local version of its Chevrolet Spark 1.2 - the Campus - to appeal to younger buyers (or their parents!).

Malcolm Gauld, GMSA’s sales and marketing boss, told Wheels24: “The Spark has an important role in GMSA’s local programme that will raise the company’s locally production volume to 50 000 units in line with the government’s Automotive Production Development Plan."

TAILORED SPECS

The car also had "an important role" to play in providing buyers with an entry-level step into Chevrolet.

Gauld added: “The transfer of Spark production to South Africa has allowed us far better to exploit the opportunities to tailor vehicle specifications to local requirements.”

So, the Campus joins the Spark 1.2 L and Spark 1.2 LS as an entry-level model. It has, GM says, all the current styling and tech of the L and LS models but has cut back on some of the non-essentials and styling options on the L-spec model to shave the price to R99 900 (inc VAT), R7 600 less than the Spark L.

Still in the car are anti-lock brakes, front air bags and a transponder immobiliser with key-activated central locking, aircon, power-assisted steering, tinted glass, rear demister and driver's seat height adjustment. External door releases, bumpers and mirrors are colour-matched to the body.

So how to save the R7600? Delete from the specs the audio system, the power front windows, the rear screen wiper, the roof rails and the remote-controlled central locking/alarm. All to save 7.2% of the L model's price - hardly seems worth it because a post-sale audio system is never as good as a factory-fitted one.

OTHER MODELS

The 1.2-litre engine is the same as its sister models, a quad-valve unit producting 60kW at 6400rpm and 108Nm at 4800rpm. Top speed is 164km/h with acceleration from 0-100km/h achieved in 13.3sec. Urban fuel consumption is listed as seven litres/100km, general use at around 5.4/100km. Combined CO2 emissions are below the 130g/km tax threshold at 129g/km.

The other two Chev Spark models currently available are the Spark 1.2 L at R107 500 and the Spark 1.2 LS at R116 500.

The Campus will be sold with a five-year or 120 000km warranty and roadside assistance. Service intervals are 12 months or 15 000km. A three-year or 60 000km service plan is an option.
