WOLFSBURG, Germany - VW has reported that sales of its Scirocco coupe have zoomed past a million, which is cause for celebration, especially if you're VW.
For the rest of us - well, to be accurate, only Germany and, for some reason, China - will be issued with the Scirocco Million, a special-edition version available only in black but with a number of distinctivising features, among them R-Line bumpers, R-Line door sills, smoked tail lights, ‘Million’ stickers on the wings and dark-tinted rear glass.
THREE GENERATIONS
The cabin will have black leather upholstery with orange stitching, other orange highlights, and ‘Million’ decals on the door sills and there will be contrast panels on the bonnet and tail.
The first generation Scirocco was launched in 1974. Seven years later, in 1981, the second generation was introduced and remained in production until 1992; 795 650 Mk.I and II Sciroccos were built then, in 2008 after a 16-year absence, along came the third generation and in just less than five years it has added 204 350 to the global total.
The Mk.1 1 Scirocco was sold in South Africa back in the late 1970's in small numbers but today the third generation, launched here in 2009, is selling at a rate of 40 to 50 a month.
