Flood of Audi S models for SA

Following on the recent updates to the S4 and S5 ranges, Audi SA has now rolled out further changes to its line-up.

The S6 and S7 Sportback are both fitted with a four-litre, twin-turbo V8 generating 309kW and 550Nm of torque from 1400 to 5200rpm.

NO V10 POWER

Sadly, the S8 loses its 5.2-litre V10 muscle (and growl) in favour of the same V8 engine of its smaller siblings, although its output has been stepped up to deliver 382kW/650Nm – a healthy improvement on its predecessor.

The updated S models stay true to the overall brief of being the ultimate "everyday sports cars" – the S6 accelerates to 100km/h in 4.6sec, the S7 Sportback in 4.7 and the S8 beats both with its sprint time of 4.2sec - well into Merc SL AMG territory.

The S6 and S7 Sportback use a seven-speed S tronic dual clutch transmission, while the S8 uses an eight-speed Tiptronic box.

Audi’s quattro permanent all-wheel drive is standard on each model although the S8 adds a sport differential as standard to also distribute power between the rear wheels.

These Audis might be consummate sports cars but they need not be branded fue-guzzlers. The twin-turbo V8 uses a “cylinder on demand” system that turns off four of the eight cylinders at low load, in town driving situations, for instance.

This has an overall effect of reducing fuel consumption by as much as 10%, Audi claimed, quoting average fuel consumption of 9.6/100km for the S6 and S7 Sportback and 10.2 for the S8.

S TRINKETS

Widespread use of aluminium is visible across the S models – the S8 is made entirely of the beer-can metal and weighs 1975kg – with benefits for the cars’ fuel consumption and aero properties.

In keeping with the Audi blueprint, exterior detail enhancements are subtle. They include black brake callipers, twin exhausts, S-badging for the sills, 19” (S6 and S7) and 20” (S8) S-design alloys and signature aluminium finishing for the wing mirrors.

Xenon Plus headlights with LED daytime running lights and rear lights are standard on the S6 and S7 Sportback, while full LEDs are standard on the S8.

Inside the cabins, the understated theme is continued with the use of grey instrument dials with white needles for the driver, aluminium-look trims throughout the cabin and three-spoke multifunction steering wheels.

Sport seats with electric adjustment are standard for front occupants in a leather and Alcantara finish for the S6 and S7. Seats in the S7 have integrated head restraints, while the S8’s “deluxe” seats, finished in Valcona leather, are designed exclusively for this model.

Audi Connect – accessed through the MMI Navigation Plus system with Bluetooth that allows a car to be converted into a WLAN hotspot – is also standard across the latest S models.
