Are you a sophisticated hooligan who requires more space (and perhaps styling elegance) than Audi’s S4 provides?
Well, now there’s the S5 Sportback, which should suit the needs of those requiring rapid four-door coupe transport with all-wheel drive.
S5 with a really big boot?
The latest addition to Audi burgeoning ‘S’ range transposes most of the S4’s go-faster goodies to the Sportback’s elegant Markus Gleitz penned design.
Distinguishing the S5 model from its A5 Sportback siblings are 18-inch S-design alloy wheels hiding ‘S5’ embellished brake callipers. The regulation 'S5' badges scattered about the car's styling surfaces ensure you're constantly reminded of this Sportback's special status.
In an attempt to shore up the A5 Sportback’s dynamics to ‘S’ specification, Audi engineers specified a 10mm ride height reduction and added more rebound resistant springs and dampers to each wheel corner.
Most of the other dynamic enhancers are options, like the brilliant active Sport differential (R12 200), Audi's drive select (R16 540) and dynamic steering. We’d recommend optioning all three to create dynamic harmony and so doing get the most from your S5 Sportback.
Blown V6 engine good for 0-100km/h in 5.4 seconds and sub 10l/100km economy if you drive like an angel.
S4 power
Powering the S5 four-door coupe is the S4 sourced 3.0T FSI engine.
Boosting the direct-injection V6’s performance is a mechanically driven supercharger compressing at a mellow rate of 0.8bar.
Outputs tally 245kW and 440Nm which ensure a benchmark 0-100km/h sprint time of only 5.4 seconds courtesy of the S5 Sportback’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Audi claims sub 10l/100km consumption in the combined cycle...
Despite the strong increase in performance the S5 Sportback retains all its comfort cues – including load through practically, a 480l boot (or is it a hatch?) and superior cabin comfort dimensions compared to S4.
Standard features for the S5 Sportback included a sport steering wheel (with satellite control functionality), silk trims with aluminium inlays and sport seats. The acoustically excellent Bang & Olufsen sound system (R6 700), SatNav (R21 300) and – rather peculiarly - front and rear park distance control (7 200) are all options.
Tick the Sport differential and drive select option boxes and S5 Sportback makes a very convincing case for itself a more contemporary alternative to the S6, sort of...
