The Mazda6 range has been trimmed down from five to four models locally as part of a mid-lifecycle facelift.

In terms of the range rationalisation, product planners have decided to discontinue the Mazda6 2.5l six-speed manual as part of the Mazda6 facelift, the details of which were first shown at the Geneva motor show in March.

Smooth looker

As part of the facelift, Mazda’s mid-sized sedan benefits from new front and rear light clusters. The Mazda6’s grille is embellished with an elaborate chrome accent treatment too.

More detailed styling changes are the repositioning of the fog lights to a home within the vertical slashes of the front bumper.

Mechanically the facelift carries over both the 2l (108kW/184Nm) and 2.5l (126kW/228Nm) four-cylinder engines. In terms of transmission options, the rationalised range sees the option of six-speed manual shifting for the 2.5l models dropped.

In an attempt to further refine the Mazda6’s ride and handling engineers have reduces the spring constant of the double-wishbone front suspension’s stabiliser bushes, hoping to achieve smoother turn-in characteristics.

Three trim levels

Tallied in terms of specification the new Mazda6 range has three trim levels: Original, Active and Individual.

The entry level 2.0 Original features 16-inch alloy wheels, six-airbags, MP3 compatible infotainment and auto headlights.

In Active trim a six-CD changer, leather trim (covering power adjustable front seats), 17-inch wheels, rain-sensing wipers and satellite steering wheel controls are added to those features standard on the Original.

If you prefer your Mazda6 to operate with dual-pedal convenience there are two 2.5l cars, now solely available with an automatic transmission. Of these the 2.5l Active is similar in specification to its smaller 2.0 sibling.

The range topping 2.5 Individual does its billing justice with Bi-Xenon headlight illumination (with adaptive swivel functionality), a BOSE sound system, keyless entry, a colour coded aft spoiler, aluminium pedal set and distinctive 18-inch alloy wheels.
