Renault's Kan(do)goo van is back

If you like your urban logistics run with some French flair, Renault’s third-generation Kangoo van is now available in South Africa.

Riding on a shared Scenic platform, the Kangoo‘s wheelbase is 100mm longer, with front and rear tracking widths 120mm greater.

The result? Well, loading volume is up by 250 from 2750 to 3000-litres and the box can handle a European Union specification pallet between its rear wheel arches, thanks to the 120mm increase in rear track.

Other logistical niceties include a 16mm wider sliding side door, which sounds inconsequential but, if you've ever had to load an object that is a few millimetres too big for its ingress point you’ll appreciate the improvement.

NO DIESEL...

The Kangoo’s load-rated at 800kg and powered by Renault’s 1.6-litre, eight-valve petrol engine (familiar to local Sandero owners), good for 64kW/128Nm. There’s no turbodiesel. Renault claims the old-school petrol engine should be good for 8.2 litres/100km.

Its suspension is familiar delivery-van fare (Macpherson struts up front with a torsion beam connecting the rear wheels), with Renault claiming a 10.7m turning circle, identical to that of the current Clio. Practical 15" rims and 195/65 tyres – including a full-sized spare  – with Bosch anti-lock brakes act on all wheels.

The vKangoo’s utility billing reflects in its cabin appointments and features. The five-speed manual shifter is mounted on the fascia; an aviation-style parking brake control frees up stowage space in the console between the front seats.

Other clever stowage solutions include an A4-format document storage area on the modern dashboard, complete with pen holder.

There's also an easy-access 13-litre ceiling rack designed to hold items such as a road atlas, documents or a small bag. Generously sized four-litre door compartments can take documents plus a 1.5-litre bottle.

Aicon is standard, along with remote-controlled central locking, a trip data computer and height-adjustable driver’s seat. A radio with MP3-compatible CD and Bluetooth connectivity is available as an after-sales dealer fitting.

As a fleet ownership proposition, the Kangoo requires an oil change only every 15 000 km, the air-filter needs replacing every 30 000km and the timing belt at 90 000km.

Renault’s Confiance 60 000km/three-year maintenance plan is standard, backed by a 150 000km or five-year warranty. Price: R164 900.
