Renault brings back Gordini legend

Renault South Africa has launched the Twingo Gordini Renault Sport  – a car that revives one of the most legendary names in motorsport.

Amédée Gordini developed almost 200 000 Renault cars for racing over a 20-year period.

Xavier Gobille, Renault’s SA managing director, said, "The Twingo Gordini RS is the most exciting and dynamic rendition of the Twingo range to date.”

He added the Gordini RS was part of Renault’s drive to produce a sporty range of cars at affordable prices. “We believe that image-conscious buyers in SA will be drawn to the Gordini's bold athletic flair and its esteemed racing heritage."

Amédée Gordini

Amédée Gordini was born in Bazzano near Bologna, Italy, in 1899. From an early age he was fascinated by cars and motor racing and began living his dream by working as a mechanic in his teens. After the First World War, in Paris, he competed in various forms of motorsport, including Grand Prix racing and the Le Mans 24-hour.

He later established the Gordini company, which merged into Renault at the end of 1968. It became the foundation for Renault Sport Technologies – a division which has produced Renault Sport versions of the Clio, Mégane and Twingo over the years.

The Twingo Gordini RS

In Gordini tradition, the Twingo Gordini RS has blue metallic paint with two white racing stripes extending from the bonnet, over the roof to the boot hatch.

SPORTY LOOK: Twinspoke rims highlight the Gordini's sports heritage.

The front and rear bumpers are black, the foglight surrounds, exterior mirror housings and lip spoiler white. The rear windows feature additional tinting and the car has double-spoke 17" aluminium alloy wheels, up from  the 16" versions on the Twingo RS, matched to 195/40 R17 tyres.

There are also 'Gordini Series' badges just behind the doors and Renault Sport seats and Gordini-badged leather upholstery. There is a blue gear shifter below a Gordini-badged gear knob and a blue rev counter with white surround.

The Gordini has automatic aircon, automatic headlights activation and rain sensors, cruise control with speed limiter, and independent sliding rear seats.

There's also a full-featured audio system with a separate high-level display. It incorporates a radio and MP3-compatible CD player with steering wheel-mounted satellite controls, hands-free Bluetooth cellphone integration as well as line-in connectivity for personal music and MP3 players.

There are additional curtain airbags as standard (over and above the driver, passenger and side bags) and the electronic stability programme can be fully disengaged.

LEATHER SHADES: Tasteful blue highlights brighten the Gordini's cabin.

Optional features include a sunroof, carpet set embroidered with Gordini motif, and a Gordini key cover.

The sports chassis and suspension of the RS are retaine, but 17" rims and 40-profile tyres are included. There is a 1.6-litre 16-valve fuel-injected engine capable of 98kW at 6750rpm and 160Nm at 4400.

It also has reduced CO2 emissions, dropping from 165 to 160g/km. Combined cycle fuel consumption is given as seven litres/100 km.

The Twingo Gordini RS costs R214 900, including a three-year or 60 000km service plan and Renault's five-year or 150 000km warranty.
